Modelling in Initial Teacher Education (ITE): Reflections on the Engagement of Student Teachers with Cooperative Learning in ITE

The participants were experientially trained in cooperative learning approaches through modelling by their tutor for the Pedagogy and Curriculum module of the course. This study examines whether the participants felt confident implementing cooperative learning and if they thought this helped them deliver the new curriculum in Scotland, Curriculum for Excellence. The findings reveal that the capacity of student teachers to engage with cooperative learning was positive. Furthermore, the engagement of departments with any active learning practices had a positive effect on student teachers’ confidence in delivering cooperative learning in the classroom.

Curriculum Orientations of Pre-service Teachers in Jordan: A Required Reform Initiative for Professional Development

The primary purpose of this study was to identify the curriculum orientation profiles of pre-service teachers participating in the teacher education programs at the Hashemite University in Jordan. Rigorous translation procedures were utilized to validate an Arabic version of the Curriculum Orientation Inventory (COI) for use in Jordan. The results of the factor analysis indicated that five latent factors with 29 items emerged from the Jordanian data highly consistent with the English version of the COI. Results also indicated that pre-service teachers valued all the curriculum orientations to various degrees. Specifically, they highly valued the Cognitive Process orientation followed by the Social Reconstruction orientation and the Humanistic orientation.

Narrative Analysis of ‘Hidden Stories’: A Potential Tool for Teacher Training

This research set out to examine the contribution of narrative analysis of a hidden story to the potential reassessment of the narrator’s self and identity. The phenomenon of ‘hidden stories’ is presented here through an exemplary story told by a woman teacher, who revealed it for the first time in a seminar work, employing narrative analysis to examine its long-term effect on her. The findings reveal how narrative analysis facilitated the teacher's in-depth understanding of her identity at different life stages, thereby enabling her to reconstruct it anew. The story of the autobiographical event and its analysis helped the teacher not only to free herself from the difficult event that she had undergone as a young pupil, and had hidden for such a long time, but also to confront it face to face and conduct a deep internal dialogue with it.

What Are Student Inservice Teachers Talking about in their Online Communities of Practice? Investigating Student Inservice Teachers’ Experiences in a Double-Layered CoP

This case study is the first phase of a large-scale design-based research project to implement a theoretically derived double-layered CoP model within real-world teacher development practices. The main goal of this first iteration is to evaluate the courses and test and refine the CoP model for future implementations. This article demonstrates the potential synergies between two major approaches to teacher professional development practices: i) teachers’ CoPs development and ii) online teacher education courses. The analysis of student inservice teachers’ CoPs experiences shows that the two layers of CoPs supported each other iteratively through the course period.

Using Video Records to Mediate Teaching Interns’ Critical Reflection

This study explores how interns’ video-based reflections provide evidence that the use of video records of teaching interns’ promotes the development of critical reflection around instruction and learning. Key findings suggest that the existing literature on reflection suggests that beginning teachers rarely, if ever, reflect on issues related to instruction and learning, reflection on instruction and learning can emerge early in a novices’ development when video is used as a mediating tool.

Examining Changes of Preservice Teachers’ Beliefs about Technology Integration during Student Teaching

This case study aimed to examine changes in preservice teachers’ beliefs about technology integration during the student teaching semester in USA. The findings indicated the preservice teachers’ beliefs about technology integration changed in two directions. Although changes may be attributed to cooperating teachers’ practices about technology integration, this study suggested that cooperating teachers’ modeling does not necessarily lead preservice teachers to change their beliefs about technology integration in a positive way.

Open Guided Inquiry Laboratory in Physics Teacher Education

This study has investigated the use of an open guided inquiry laboratory course in which a group of pre-service teachers planned and implemented practical work for school purposes. The results show that peer discussions about content and instructional decisions within active designing teaching sequences have enabled the participants to become aware of several aspects of a physics teacher’s teacher knowledge. Furthermore, the pre-service teachers who participated in this project suggested that they had learnt subject matter knowledge during the Course of Laboratory Practice for Physics Teachers (CLP). In light of the results, the authors would warmly suggest including the early use of the open guided inquiry laboratory, as part of the bachelor degree studies, for preservice physics teachers.

Exploring Exemplary Elementary Teachers’ Conceptions and Implementation of Inquiry Science

This study was an exploration of the conceptions of inquiry science held by exemplary elementary teachers. The study explored the ideas, understandings, and the recommendations for teaching inquiry science of exemplary elementary teachers and the ways that they use inquiry science in their classrooms. The findings reveal that the six exemplary teachers held ideas about inquiry as ‘‘finding things out’’ and all described themselves as having been children who explored and experimented with the world around them. The teachers in this group all recommended that when encouraging other teachers to implement inquiry, they need to first recognize its importance, and certainly this will take involving teachers in authentic inquiry experiences as learners so that they will be able to begin to view themselves, as these focus group teachers did, as problem-solvers and experimenters.

Facilitating Growth in Prospective Teachers’ Knowledge: Teaching Geometry in Primary Schools

In this study, the authors were interested to investigate how a lesson plan study (LPS) activity conducted within the context of a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment would impact on prospective teachers’ repertoires of pedagogical-content knowledge (PCK) about teaching primary school mathematics. By the end of this study, it was found that the prospective teachers had made considerable advances to their repertoires of PCK. The authors found several factors that influenced growth in PCK.
