School Cultures as Contexts for Informal Teacher Learning

What Predicts Fear of School Violence Among U.S. Adolescents?

Ensuring a safe learning environment for every student at school is a major responsibility of educators, school administrators, and policy makers in our society. The objectives of this study are (1) to examine the characteristics of students who fear being victimized by school violence and (2) to examine teacher and school characteristics associated with students’ fear. The study found that low achievers reported a higher level of fear of school violence than high achievers.

Understanding Singaporean Preschool Teachers' Beliefs about Literacy Development: Four Different Perspectives

Investigating teachers' beliefs may shed light on their activities in the classroom, and in turn, on the pedagogical process itself. A study involving Q-methodology was conducted in Singaporean preschools to investigate some teachers' perceptions of early literacy development and instruction. The study revealed four viewpoint groups among the 30 preschool teachers who participated in the study, and possible teacher characteristics that distinguish the viewpoints from each other.

Discrimination, Performance and Recuperation: How Teachers and Pupils Challenge and Recover Discourses of Sexualities in Schools

This article seeks to examine the ways in which a heteronormative discourse dominates the practice and policies of schools in respect of sexualities. The response of the dominant discourse is to reassert its control, closing down such performance and re-emphasising old normativities. However, in this complex and messy expression of sexualities in schools identities are changed for all.

Looking through the Lens of A Teacher's Life: The Power of Prototypical Stories in Understanding Teachers' Instructional Decisions in Mathematics

Using a lens provided by pivotal or prototypical stories teachers told about their past experiences, connections were suggested between these past experiences and their instructional decisions.

Teachers' Approaches towards Word Problem Solving: Elaborating or Restricting the Problem Context

This contribution reports about a seven-month long video-based study in two regular Flemish sixth-grade mathematics classrooms. The focus is on teachers' approaches towards problem solving. The findings have highlighted that the word problem-solving lessons were more dominated by a paradigmatic than a narrative approach and that interventions in which the relation between the mathematics structure and the realistic constraints of the problem context is addressed, were rare.

Exploring the Tactfulness of Implementing Play in the Classroom: A Hong Kong Experience

'Learning through play' in early childhood education is widely advocated, but studies show that play is not easily enacted in classrooms. This article examines how one teacher implemented learning through play within a formal and didactic Hong Kong pre-school classroom. The findings support the adoption of 'play' in young children's learning and reveal tactful ways in which a teacher can encourage the evolving 'flow' of children's play while simultaneously scaffolding their learning.

Classroom-Level Curriculum Development: EFL Teachers as Curriculum-Developers, Curriculum-Makers and Curriculum-Transmitters

This qualitative study aimed to explore teacher curriculum approaches and the strategies attached to each approach. The study was grounded in teacher curriculum development, curriculum implementation, teacher development, student cognitive and affective change and constructivism. Working with English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers and mixed-nationality college students, the study reached a teacher curriculum approach classification comprising curriculum-transmission, curriculum-development and curriculum-making. It recommended alternatives for teacher, student and curriculum development, curriculum implementation and teacher training.

Teacher Verbal Ability and School Outcomes: Where Is the Evidence?

Teachers' verbal ability has been thought to predict student achievement ever since the relationship was found in the classic Equality of Educational Opportunity (EEO) study by Coleman et al. By way of meta-analysis the authors examine the evidence on the power of teachers' verbal ability as a predictor of school outcomes. The findings indicate that teacher verbal ability is not the strongest predictor of students' academic achievement.
