'Can Anyone Offer any Words of Encouragement?” Online Dialogue as a Support Mechanism for Preservice Teachers

Isolation and lack of support contribute to high attrition. This study conducted a qualitative research using forum discussion. Topics, dialogues and support were discussed. The dialogue focused on six majors concerns, of interest was emotional engagement, responsiveness to each other, and meaning-making through storytelling.

Using Student Response Systems in Lecture-Based Instruction: Does It Change Student Engagement and Learning?

The study investigated the effects of a student response system in graduate lecture of a special education class. Students demonstrated more mastery of content on weekly quizzes and reported increased class engagement on those weeks where the SRS was used. They reported high preference for the SRS use, believed it helped them in their learning, and recommended that other classes use a similar system.

Simulation and the Need for Practice in Teacher Preparation

A pilot study data comparing simulation users’ abilities to analyze hypothetical teaching scenarios, interviews, and reflective writing in real work samples suggest that the simulation plays a role in helping candidates

Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching and the Mathematical Quality of Instruction: An Exploratory Study

This study illuminates the claims that teachers' mathematical knowledge plays an important role in their teaching of this subject matter. In particular, we focus on teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT), which includes both the mathematical knowledge that is common to individuals working in diverse professions and the mathematical knowledge that is specialized to teaching.A significant, strong, and positive association is found between levels of MKT and the mathematical quality of instruction.

Silent Pedagogy and Rethinking Classroom Practice: Structuring Teaching through Silence rather than Talk

The article considers the value placed on talk as opposed to silence in the classroom and suggests that a cultural bias towards talk means that silence is commonly perceived negatively. It concludes by proposing that classroom observations should take into account the complex skills of 'silent pedagogy' where the teacher makes conscious decisions to abstain from intervention based on continuous sensitive readings of the learning environment.

Projects in a Sixth-Grade Classroom: Entering a Bumpy but Promising Road

In this article the possibility of developing authentic project work in a sixth-grade classroom of a Venezuelan school is examined, by means of action research (AR) methodology. Two AR cycles with two different projects were carried out. The results show that on the one hand student participation increased in all stages of the project work. On the other hand, students encountered some difficulties carrying out empirical research activities and also relating them to theoretical content, although progress in this regard was made.
