Wiki as a Collaborative Learning Tool in a Language Arts Methods Class

The purpose of this study was to determine how contributing to a class wiki affected the learning of preservice teachers enrolled in a language arts methods class. 37 preservice teachers participated in this study. Students' reflections indicate that contributing to the class wiki led to a deeper processing of the course content.

Game-Based Teaching: What Educators Can Learn from Videogames

This investigation examines the success, pitfalls, and lessons learned from incorporating videogame-like components into an educational technology class. The students in this class chose various levels at which to complete assignments but had to earn a certain number of points before being able to move on to the next assignment. Findings reveal parallels between the students' cognitive, motivational, and affective processes and those of gamers.

Supporting Learner-Centered ICT Integration: The Influence of Collaborative and Needs-Based Professional Development

A mixed-method study was carried out to examine how teacher attitude and professional development influence learner-centered Information Communication Technology (ICT) integration. A questionnaire, interviews and observations were used to gather data in a school district in Nova Scotia, Canada. Findings suggest that learner-centered ICT integration is more likely to occur needs-based, collaborative professional development programs are provided.

Preparing Preservice Teachers for 21st Century Classrooms: Transforming Attitudes and Behaviors About Innovative Technology

This article promotes instructors’ ideas about behaviors of 21st century teachers. It also explores their efforts to support their preservice teachers to join this rank. In this qualitative study, three instructors report the results of implementing a new project, the Innovations Mini-Teach, into their course. The findings indicated that preservice teachers in this study used a variety of strategies to learn new innovations well enough to teach or model their use to classmates.

Student Teachers’ Use of Technology-Generated Representations: Exemplars and Rationales

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics identified technology as a feature of high-quality mathematics education. The purposes of this study are to: (1) observe and describe how pre-service mathematics teachers subsequently incorporated technology-generated representations into their student teaching; and (2) understand and expound on their rationales for using such representations. The authors found that these pre-service teachers appropriately utilized the provided technology to generate representations for the purpose of helping their pupils to develop conceptual understanding and reasoning.

Studying Classroom Practice: Case Development for Professional Learning in Technology Integration

This study examined the efficacy of case development as an instrument for teacher learning in technology integration. The data consisted of case narratives developed by five in-service teachers, a volume of online discussion entries, and in-depth interviews. Findings indicated that case development can help teachers develop a critical understanding of the nuanced relationship between technology, content, and pedagogy and transfer their learning into practice.

The Benefits and Limitations of Online Group Work in a Teacher Education Program

This study examined the benefits and difficulties that graduate student teachers perceived while participating in online collaborative group activities during their first year of a masters program. The study discovered the three most prominent perceived learning outcomes. The article describes the difficulties encountered while attempting to achieve these online collaborative tasks.

Engaging with Faculty to Develop, Implement, and Pilot Electronic Performance Assessments of Student Teachers Using Mobile Devices

This paper discusses the development and implementation of a technology-supportedstudent teacher performance assessment that supports integration with a larger electronic assessment system. Of the 20 supervisors who were invited to the field test, 18 completed the survey and 8 participated in the focus group. Supervisors were overwhelmingly positive about the experience, the value of the updated assessments, and the ongoing plans to support field observations with mobile technologies. However, issues related to training, support, and trust loom largely for successful adoption, diffusion, and successful use of technology-supported assessments.

The Impact of Pre-Service Field Training Sessions on the Probability of Future Teachers Using ICT in School

In this article, the authors analyzed the data taken from a longitudinal survey on the computer skills and attitudes of students toward the integration of ICT in teaching in primary and secondary school teacher education programs at the University of Sherbrooke. The authors subsequently underline the potential contradictory effects between the classroom teaching observed during practicum and the effort to support the use of computer technology in school during university training.
