Online Jigsaw Science Inquiry for Preservice Teachers

This article introduces an online jigsaw model for preservice teachers’ science content learning. Following a description of the model and its developmental genesis, analysis of an external proficiency measure serves to evaluate the model’s validity. Data stem from a sample of 333 students who completed physical science courses in either a face-to-face or online setting, and who participated in a state-mandated certification exam.

From Symbols to Numbers: The Shifting Technologies of Education Governance

The article suggests that, alongside other significant developments, the knowledge economy has had two significant effects on education governance in Europe: first, a rapid change of policy discourse and practice, moving from constructing a European ‘culture’ to a Europe of learning governed by numbers; and second, education is slowly moving from the margins of European governance to the very centre of its policy making.

ICT Teacher Training: Evaluation of the Curriculum and Training Approach in Flanders

An interview study was conducted in Flanders, Belgium, regarding Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) teachers training. The study focused on the content and format of the teacher training and to what extent is the training linked to schools policies. The results indicate ICT programs are not well developed and linked only partially to school policies.

Integrating Technology during Student Teaching: An Examination of Teacher Work Samples

This study examined the teacher work samples of 197 student teachers to determine their level of technology integration during student teaching. Findings indicated that most student teachers planned to use some kind of technology, although only 40% planned to include computers and less than 20% planned for the use of computers by students.

Voices in Videoconferencing: Technology Integration in Teacher Education Courses

This manuscript describes the efforts of several instructors who incorporated videoconferencing in their teacher education courses at two large universities in the southeastern United States. Professors preparing teachers to teach elementary and middle school examined their interactive videoconference experiences linking preservice teachers with students in real classroom settings.

Using Distance Technology to Sustain Teacher Education for Student Teachers in Isolated Areas: The Technology Supported Induction Network

This qualitative study evaluated the Technology Supported Induction Network’s (TSIN) effect on 15 elementary education student teachers in isolated rural schools. The TSIN provided student teachers with professional development opportunities and virtual connections to their peers and university through distance technology, including an online discussion board and compressed video.
