Culture-Blind? Parental Discourse on Religion, Ethnicity and Secularism in the French Educational Context
Authors: Raveaud Maroussia
This article examines policy mediation and adaptation in a context where religious, ethnic and other cultural identities are not officially recognised in the public sphere but considered part of the private sphere. French educational policy is firmly rooted within a secular Republican framework which relies on a colour-blind approach to promote equality.

Race, Ethnicity and Difference versus Imagined Homogeneity within the European Union
Authors: Gaine Chris
This article argues three things. First, it argues that the perception of diversity being problematic in Europe has been generated largely by non-European immigration into urban areas. This has been Britain’s experience for 50 years and Spain’s for barely ,15 but whether the immigrants are ex-colonial, Turkish or Balkan migrant labour, or Africans escaping economic despair, they are likely to be seen as troublingly ‘other’.

The Impossibility of Minority Ethnic Educational ‘Success’? An Examination of the Discourses of Teachers and Pupils in British Secondary Schools
Authors: Archer Louise
This article argues that in Britain dominant educational discourses of ‘the ideal pupil’ exclude minority ethnic pupils and prevent them from inhabiting a position of authentic ‘success’. It suggests that ‘the successful pupil’ is a desired yet refused subject position for many minority ethnic young people – even for those who are (to some extent) performing educational success.

'Outsiders' and 'others': 'different' teachers teaching in culturally diverse classrooms
Authors: Santoro Ninetta
The article describes a study into minority teachers teaching in Australian schools. The qualitative study that consisted of interviews with teachers searched for broad themes and patterns relevant to the project. The author suggests that minority teachers use their cultural knowledge and experiences to develop a deeper understanding of ethnic minority students, and empathize with them through understanding their out-of-school lives from perspectives not available to the dominant cultural majority.

Have conceptual reforms (and one anti-reform) in preservice teacher education improved the education of multicultural, multilingual children and youth?
Authors: Téllez Kip
The article examines three conceptual reforms in US education and their effects on the education of multicultural and multilingual youth. The article also considers alternative certification programs. According to the author, although each reform improved preservice teachers' preparation to teach multilingual learners, none actually changed the education of under-served youth. The author inks the field's focus on the preparation of teachers for diverse students and the moral dimension of teacher education, concluding that such a connection may be the only way to maintain the professional school preparation of teachers.

Unreached and Unreasonable: Curriculum Standards and Children's Understanding of Ethnic Diversity in Canada
Authors: Peck Carla Lee, Sears Alan, Donaldson Shanell
This article traces the development of contemporary curriculum standards with regard to diversity and examines those standards in the context of a study of grade 7 students' understanding of diversity in New Brunswick. It presents evidence to suggest students are falling far short of expectations outlined in standards documents. While the sparse and fragmentary nature of student understanding should be of concern, this article also identifies key areas of concern about the development and implementation of the standards themselves. We argue that expecting teachers to teach toward, and students to attain, the standards might be unreasonable in light of these concerns.

What student teachers learn about multicultural education from their cooperating teachers
Authors: Téllez Kip
A study to examine the role of cooperating teachers for increasingly diverse student population was conducted with five cooperating teachers from California.
