What Teacher Candidates Learned About Diversity, Social Justice, and Themselves From Service-Learning Experiences

The article describes how service learning provides opportunity to understand social justice, multiculturalism, diversity and themselves. Although the teachers were from predominantly white middle-class backgrounds, all shared in the discussions regarding preconceived notions, teaching in diverse situations, and how preconceived notions were overcome.

Student Engagement in the Teaching and Learning of Grammar: A Case Study of an Early-Career Secondary School English Teacher

The article describes a study conducted by one of the co-authors, a secondary school grammar teacher. The study consisted of an analysis of data gathered from four settings: university teacher education program, student teaching, first job and second job. Knowledge about Education for Sustainable Development: four case studies of student teachers in English secondary schools

The article involves a case study research into how four student teachers taking part in a one-year teacher education programme in a university in England translate their knowledge, experiences and beliefs about Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into classroom practice in the context of the Geography National Curriculum and ESD policies in secondary schools. The article reveals some of the ethical and political dilemmas faced by student teachers who, as committed environmentalists, struggle to resolve the tensions between the constraints of policy, school culture, school teaching materials and their own values and enthusiasms.

The development of student teachers' views on pupil misbehaviour during an initial teacher training programme in England and Norway

The article discusses questionnaires filled out by postgraduate student teachers at the start and the end of teacher training courses in York (England) and Stavanger (Norway). The questionnaires explored the student teachers' views regarding student misbehavior, frequency of student misbehavior and strategies for dealing with misbehavior. In addition, the postgraduate students were asked about their confidence that as full time teachers they will develop the skills to deal with misbehavior in the classroom. The article outlined major factors accounting for misbehavior, and areas where there appear to be shifts in students' views over the course of their training year and differences between the students across the two settings (York and Stavanger).

Does burnout begin with student-teaching? Analyzing efficacy, burnout, and support during the student-teaching semester

Burnout may begin as early as the student teaching experience. The article examines data from 49 student-teachers in the Southwest United States, gathered twice during their student-teaching period. The data included teacher efficacy, burnout, learning climate and cooperating teacher support. The study indicates significant interactions in three factors of burnout by guidance group, such that student-teachers who experience high guidance demonstrate lower levels of burnout at the end of their practicum.
